Coral reefs and vibrant industrial landscapes are rarely used together in one sentence, yet we are here with a room on a photo gallery that illustrates their coexistence.

In a Facebook post made Sunday by Singapore Reef Watch – a page dedicated to "Discovering the Reefs and Coastal Shores of Singapore" – a bunch of improbable photos have been uploaded. Check this one: the corals in the foreground, the chimneys of the refinery in the background.

Photos were taken at Terumbu Hantu, a sparse ditch located off Pulau Hantu. it's not haunted), and right in front of Pulau Bukom, the site of Shell's largest oil refinery. Fun fact: The oil giant has been present on the island since 1891 and it is in 1961 that Singapore's first oil refinery is installed on the Pulau Bukom. The history of the people of Pulau Bukom and its long relationship with Shell is neatly narrated here, if that interests you.

But back to Terumbu Hantu. Despite its proximity to the Pulau Bukom refineries, Pulau Hantu is home to rich reefs with a wide variety of hard corals and soft corals.

It is possible to walk among the reefs of the intertidal zone, and it is so that these magnificent pictures were taken.

Yeap, the presence of large vessels and nearby petrochemical plants do not prevent biodiversity from flourishing at Terumbu Hantu. It is therefore good to hear that the government plans to keep it as long as possible under the 2012 Singapore Green Plan.

Meanwhile, check out the full photo gallery below, as well as some other galleries Terumbu Hantu set up by other nature lovers.
