Tuna, salmon, mackerel, cod – whatever your preference, eating large quantities of seafood may help you stay healthy with age, according to a new study, reports the Chronicle.info with reference to apteka.ua.

According to the results of 22 years of observations, researchers found that higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which are rich in seafood, was associated with better chances of healthy aging.

The study involved more than 2,600 adults included in a major study of heart health. At baseline the average age of participants was 74 years.

“Healthy aging” was defined as an increase in the number of years, maintaining good physical and mental functions and without major chronic diseases. Only 11% of people in the study achieved this goal, said the team of scientists, headed by Heidi Lai (Heidi Lai) from the school of science and nutrition policy at tufts University (School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University), USA.

The study does not determine causality. However, after taking into account such factors as lifestyle, etc., a team of scientists under the leadership of H. Lai found that people with the highest levels of omega-3 derived from seafood, noted a 24% slower processes of aging compared to those who have this level were low.

The study results were published October 17 in the journal “BMJ”.

The positive effect of omega-3 fatty acids derived from seafood, apparently, does not disappear for more than two decades of research, the researchers note in a press release of the journal.

As concluded group H. Lai, these findings support the guidelines on the need to increase consumption of marine fish in the food of elderly people.
