JAKARTA, July 17 (Xinhua) – Indonesia has pledged to increase the number of flights in and out of the country, in order to accommodate the number of athletes, officials and observers arriving at the 18th Asian Games this year.

The plan was released after the Indonesian authorities predicted that visitors from 60 nations and regions would arrive in the country as the second largest sporting event in the world after the Olympics.

aircraft, said Agus Santoso, director general of the airline's air transport division.

"The number of scheduled arrivals and departures increases steadily when one includes the number of supporters from each country, or those who want to attend the event," he said in a statement

Santoso added that air transport would be the most common means of transportation for visitors to the Asian Games, adding that airliners will be asked to propose new flight schedules to the ministry.

"It is therefore imperative to plan additional flights to serve delegates and supporters, so that their movements are smooth and safe," Santoso said. The ministry noted that the two main airports in operation during the Games would be the Soekarno Hatta International Airport in Jakarta and the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II International Airport in Palembang, the provincial capital of South Sumatra.

He added that other smaller airports see the increase in traffic, such as the I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali and the Hussein Sastranegara International Airport in Bandung, provincial capital of West Java.

The 18th Asian Games will be held in Jakarta and Palembang from August 18th to September 2nd, with 42 sports in the spotlight.
