The very low rate of high-fat carbohydrates and ketos has attracted a lot of fans because of its dramatic weight loss results. Now, a new study on New York has found that the miracle diet can also improve the effectiveness of an emerging class of cancer drugs.
The study was performed on mice, and Weill Cornell Medicine, Columbia Irving University Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian.
This new class of drugs works by targeting an insulin-activated enzyme called phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase or PI3K. Complications occur when patients taking these drugs develop excessive blood sugar or hyperglycemia, which means that they have to stop taking the treatment.
"These new treatments depend on patients' ability to maintain low blood sugar levels. Dr. Lewis C. Cantley, Meyer Director of the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medicine
"We have demonstrated that if we maintain insulin with the ketogenic diet, it significantly improves the efficacy of these anti-cancer drugs. "
" This study represents a truly innovative approach to cancer, and for decades we have been trying to alter human metabolism to make cancer cells more sensitive to chemotherapy or targeted drugs. this drug itself allows some kind of resistance – at least in animal models – is a total surprise. "
" We are excited to try this approach in humans, "said Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee. , Associate Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and an Oncologist at NewYork-Presbyterian / Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
The researchers then hope to investigate whether combining an intravenous PI3K inhibitor approved by the FDA with the ketogenic diet, specially prepared by nutritionists, is safe and improves outcomes for people with breast cancer, endometrial cancer, leukemias or lymphomas.
