Junpei Yasuda disappeared after returning to Syria in June 2015 to cover the country's civil war. It is believed that he is being held by a local militant group.

The video, showing the man speaking in English for about 50 seconds, was posted on Saturday.

The man said that he was Junpei, and that the video was filmed on October 17, 2017. He said that he was fine and that he was praying for the safety of his family. The man also said that he hopes to see his family soon, asking them not to forget about it and not give up.

A person involved in displaying images told NHK that Yasuda's health conditions had deteriorated. According to an NHK reporter, the video could be part of the Yasuda kidnappers' efforts to resume negotiations with the Japanese government over his release.

Yasuda was last seen on the Internet in May 2016. He was holding a sign that said, "Please, help, it's the last chance."
