SHANGHAI-The under-display fingerprint sensor is real, but I understand why Apple does not use it. At the Mobile World Congress in Shanghai, I had the chance to try the Vivo NEX phone, which realizes Apple's dream of a full screen without a notch via a sensor. sub-screen fingerprint and a pop-up camera.
The NEX is a $ 780 flagship phone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. On the back, there are 12MP and 5MP cameras. On the front, the 8MP camera appears (more on that in a moment).
I came to Vivo's booth at MWCS because the NEX has an amazing screen-to-body ratio of 91.24%, a huge 6.59-inch and 1080p AMOLED display with only a slight bezel around the edges and no d & # 39; notch. You unlock the phone by pressing your finger at a designated place about one-third of the screen, where the fingerprint sensor is under-displaying.
This place is not obvious, so in the demo I was doing, the software provided a guide – a small image of a fingerprint on the unlock screen. It felt like unlocked about as fast as other fingerprint scanners. This was not a problem.
The problem that Apple may not be ready to accept, is that the NEX is a bit of a monkey stocky. It weighs over 7 ounces, and it felt noticeably thick and heavy in my hand. I'm using a OnePlus 6 right now as my main phone, and it's a bit too broad for me; the NEX felt much thicker and heavier, to the point that I began to worry if it could limit its appeal. Now, part of that is because of the 4000mAh battery, but part of it has to be because of the other components.
The form factor is as comfortable to hold in the hand as possible – it is smooth and curved, warm, shimmering glass. It's just that the device is really big.
The pop-up camera makes the NEX really thicker. Go in selfie mode, and the little guy appears as a periscope. It takes about a second, so it's slower than a standard selfie camera. Notably, the camera does not open automatically when you unlock the phone, unlike the Oppo Find X. Indeed, the Find X relies on the unlocking of the face, while the Vivo NEX asks you to 39, use the fingerprint sensor.
As I shone and stepped back into the camera, I thought about the difference between technology leaders and refiners / extensionists, because it shows the real difference between Vivo, the limit, and Apple.
Apple would certainly not be a sub-display fingerprint sensor that made its phone thicker, or a pop-up camera that delayed face recognition by one second. It will clearly wait for future versions of sensor-under-display technology, just as it expected improvements in 3G, 4G and other core technologies rather than being first.
The Vivo NEX is certainly striking. He makes waves and starts conversations. But there is a limit to the appeal of such a big heavy phone with only a 1080p screen, even if the screen is clear and sharp. Someone has to go first with these new technologies to pave the way for their integration, and I'm glad Vivo does it.
