SINGAPORE: For the first time since its inception, WorldSkills Singapore will see confronting undergraduate university students, students from private training institutions and private company employees alongside Students from ITE and polytechnicians.
The National Skills Competition for Singaporean Youth, in its 13th edition, is held every two years.
This year, the competition will take place from Thursday, July 5th to Saturday at the Suntec Convention and Exhibition Center.
The winners will represent Singapore at the WorldSkills International Competition – dubbed the "Youth Skills Olympiad" – in Kazan, Russia, in August of next year.
In previous editions of the competition, only ITE and polytechnic students participated.
At the launch of the 13th edition on Thursday, Education Minister Ong Ye Kung said that employers and industry representatives play a crucial role in encouraging young Singaporeans to develop their mastery skills through lifelong learning.
The decision to hold the competition in a public venue rather than on the ITE campuses, where previous editions of the competition were held, was also a deliberate government initiative to send a clear message it was a national competition for young people from "all walks of life," said Ong.

NEW CATEGORIES OF COMPETITIONS
In total, approximately 250 students from 10 schools will participate in 26 competition categories at WorldSkills Singapore
They include nine new categories: 3D digital video game, automotive technology, beauty therapy, cybersecurity, computer technology fashion, hairstyle, rapid transportation systems, freight forwarding and water technology.

During the year, Singapore won Two gold medals, three bronze medals and eight medals of excellence at the 44th edition of the WorldSkills International Competition held in Abu Dhabi.
