The Dark Future & # 39; is rather fun.
The world of Cyberpunk 2077 seems to be about as hardcore as possible – but should we expect something less traditional? Recently, we had the chance to meet the creator of Cyberpunk 2020, Mike Pondsmith, and play a session of the classic RPG table. While Pondsmith claims that 2077 is "pretty close to what [he] would have done," there was a particular aspect of our pen-paper adventure that seemed decidedly absent from what we saw of the dystopian future of CD Projekt Red: Cyberpunk can become completely stupid.
During our two-hour session, not only did we defuse the bombs and instigate the riots against the megacorporations of the world (you can watch or listen to all of this here), but we also have C & # 39; a good guy who spoke more of a pop-pop star than a corporate killer, and a bunch of Gilligan's manic cosplay fans' Island. And these are also not ideas that come up in our session, the Gilligans are one of the many Posergangs of Night City, essentially cosplay gangs with psychotic tendencies. The absurdity is a key element of the Cyberpunk table experiment – its gangs like Kennedys and Bozos (if all the "crazy gang of cyborgs" was not bad enough, what do you think? you crazy cyborg clowns ?), or the fact that there are classes of players that have the special ability to launch a rock show.
As much as I would like to see a group of Cannibalist Bob Denver look-alikes terrorizing the corporate sector of 2077, it makes sense that we do not have – and probably will not see – such elements in the version of the dystopia of CD Projekt Red's science fiction. Pop culture references – even those that may seem dated – and characters / factions / etc have always been part of the table experience, but things like murderous clowns or cosplayers do not necessarily match the tone of the 39 story that the developer might try to cultivate. The good news, though, is that if you want to fight a group of cyber-clowns or robo-gilligans, you only need a few of your friends around a table.
