Angry that his daughter-in-law's pet parrot bit him on the right cheek, the Vietnamese Tran Thi Thuy Hang threatened to kill the bird and demanded that it be immediately removed from their apartment
The next day, Hang, 38, hit the bird several times with a clothes pot, killing him.
Hang, a permanent resident of Singapore, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty on Wednesday (July 25). His sentence will be adjourned to August 1st.
The parrot, named Lucky, was a Sun Conure, a species of parrot native to South America. It belonged to the 26-year-old daughter-in-law of Hang Yu Mei Ling, who shares Rivervale's apartment with Hang and her biological father.
On October 27, Yu was in the living room, carrying Lucky on his shoulder. When Hang came home and passed Yu, Lucky headed for Hang and bit her on the right cheek near his eye.
In pain, Hang ran to her room and complained of the parrot to her husband. She demanded that Lucky be removed from their house, failing which she would kill him.
The next morning, she noticed that the parrot was still in its cage. After Yu and his father left home around 8 am, Hang opened Lucky's cage and hit him several times with a clothespot. Lucky ends up dying shots
When Hang's husband came back an hour later, she showed him the parrot's carcass and told him that she had hit him several times with the perch. She then disposed of the carcass in the central garbage bin.
Yu filed a lawsuit against her mother-in-law at the Singapore Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) on November 6.
The prosecution requested at least five weeks imprisonment for Hang. His lawyer, Leong Keng Kheong, said his client did not intend to kill the parrot. He said that Hang had committed the act out of frustration and that she had "bled profusely" after the parrot had bitten him.
Leong sought a "heavy fine" or a week in prison for Hang
imprisonment for up to 18 months and / or a fine of up to $ 15,000
