Thirty-five Capitol police are under investigation – including six who were suspended with pay – for their actions during the murderous siege in January, according to the department.
Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman said any officer whose actions were deemed unacceptable on Jan.6 would be punished, a department spokesperson said in a statement to the WTTG on Thursday.
“Our Professional Liability Office has been investigating the actions of 35 police officers since that day. We have currently suspended six of these agents with pay, ”the statement read.
Some Capitol Police officers were caught on camera watching rioters enter Capitol Hill without taking any action.
In a video posted to YouTube, Capitol Police Lt. Tarik Khalid Johnson can be seen wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat while speaking to several supporters of former President Trump.
Johnson – who has since been suspended from the department – donned the cap in order to gain the confidence of protesters so that they could pass him through the crowd and enter the building so he could rescue his fellow officers, reported the Wall Street Journal.
At one point in the video, Johnson, 45, hands his megaphone to one of the protesters and says, “I’ll follow you.”
The Justice Department has charged more than 250 people with storming the Capitol in a vicious attack that left five dead, including veteran Capitol Police Brian Sicknick.
As a result, Trump was impeached a second time for instigating insurgency on Capitol Hill, but the Senate failed to condemn him.
