Six Capitol policemen have been suspended with pay and 29 others are under investigation following the deadly riot last month, the department said.
Capitol Police spokesman John Stolnis told NBC News that the agency’s Professional Accountability Office is reviewing the actions of the 35 officers in the Jan.6 attack.
The riot left five people dead, including Capitol Hill cop Brian Sicknick.
“Acting chief Yogananda Pittman has ordered that any member of her department whose behavior does not adhere to the department’s rules of conduct be subjected to appropriate discipline,” Stolnis said.
NBC News reported in January that “several” US Capitol policemen had been suspended and at least 10 others were under investigation in the wake of the riot.
Pittman said at the time that the video and other evidence uncovered during an internal investigation appeared to show some officers and officials violated department policies.
Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, who chairs one of the committees that oversees the Capitol Police, told reporters one of the suspended officers appeared to have taken a selfie with members of the crowd.
Another officer was suspended after he was seen wearing a “Make American Great Again” hat and leading people inside the building, Ryan said.
Ryan said 10 to 15 other officers were under investigation, although he could not provide details on the extent of those investigations.
Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund announced his resignation the day after the riot, amid scrutiny of the department’s response to headquarters.
