Six Flags Splashtown in the Houston area closed after dozens of people were decontaminated following a chemical spill, officials say

SPRING, Texas – Dozens of people visiting Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Splashtown in the Houston area have been decontaminated after a chemical leak, according to Spring Fire Department.

The incident happened on Saturday afternoon at the park, located in Spring, Texas. The chemical leak contained a mixture of bleach and sulfuric acid, according to KSAT’s sister station, KPRC.

Officials said the chemicals leak started in the children’s pool area when a lifeguard fell ill, followed by other clients, including children.

The Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office told KPRC that 26 people had been taken to area hospitals for treatment and 39 had refused to be transported. Some people have had minor skin irritation and inhalation, officials said.

Among those who were hospitalized, KPRC reports that a 3-year-old child was also transported but is in stable condition.

Officials said the public is urged to avoid the area and Splashtown is closed until further notice.

HCFMO HAZMAT teams are also working on the scene to identify the cause of the chemical leak.
