Anytime someone involved in a TV show says something like, “This isn’t really a TV show, it’s a 6/8/12 hour movie!” I get a little nervous. Netflix does this all the time, and sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. Most often, this results in unbalanced and poorly paced television. But that’s not gonna stop the people behind WandaVision, thin! According to a member of the cast, the series apparently takes the “movie divided into TV show” approach. Teyonah Parris. But not only a movie, oh no. According to Parris, WandaVision is like “six Marvel movies wrapped in” a sitcom.
People are running out of Marvel movies right now (2020 is the first year without an MCU movie in about 5,000 years, according to a figure I just created), but WandaVision comes to take over. Because not only will the show bring viewers back to the MCU, but it will pull together enough material for six MCU movies into one show.
Speaking with EW, Teyonah Parris, who plays adult Monica Rambeau – the kid we met Captain Marvel – said: “I was like, ‘Oh, I thought we were doing a little show,’ but no, that’s six Marvel movies wrapped up in what they bill as a sitcom. “
Co-executive producer Mary livanos added: “It’s really amazing to be able to tell a long story like the comics did. In a sense, [a TV show] is a multi-issue comic book series, which on the development side of Marvel we totally understand. “
Livanos is right to compare this long story to a comic book approach, so I really don’t want to complain too much. But like I mentioned above, whenever the TV episodes give up being episodic, I tend to get nervous. Think about Mad Men, or breaking Bad, or The Sopranos. Hell, think about Frasier or Cheers. Or The simpsons. Or ER These are some of the best TV shows in the history of the medium, and they all have one thing in common – they don’t try to be 12-hour movies. Are some episodes carried over to others to tell a story? Of course, but they can also be alone. I know this is apparently a controversial statement, but here’s the problem: TV isn’t the same as movies. They are different mediums and it is best to treat them that way.
At the same time, the Honcho at the head of Marvel Studios Kevin feige assures potential viewers that you don’t need to be well versed in everything – Marvel to get started WandVision. “If you haven’t seen any [Marvel movies] And I just wanna get into this weird thing cause you love The Dick Van Dyke Show, it’s going to work, ”Feige told EW. “But if you’ve followed the 23 movies we’ve made and followed the stories in Phase 4, there are plenty of rewards waiting for you as this unfolds.”
WandaVision arrives at Disney + in December.
