According to the North Shore Abatement District, mosquitoes were collected in traps on June 5th.
According to NSMAD data, an infected mosquito was found on 16 batches in Wilmette and one mosquito infected on 34 batches tested in Skokie.
On the North Shore, a total of 15 mosquitoes were tested positive for West Nile virus.
West Nile Virus positive mosquitoes were also detected in Evanston, Glencoe, Glenview, Kenilworth, Northbrook, Northfield and Winnetka.
While the wettest May of all time was recorded in Chicago, public health officials are on the alert for an exceptional harvest of mosquitoes – and a risk of West Nile virus transmission -.
The Chicago Department of Public Health began its annual mosquito control activities on May 15th. In mid-June, the city will have treated 80,000 wells in Chicago with a larvicide, which kills immature mosquitoes. The Larvicide Extended Release Briquettes will provide control throughout the summer.
Starting Monday, the health department will install a total of 83 traps in the city and samples will be tested weekly for West Nile virus.
NSMAD recommends using insect repellent, wearing loose clothing and avoiding mosquito consumption spikes.
The NSMAD said the risk of being infected is low at the moment.
