Skull Session: Buckeyes’ national title chances somehow drop, college football roster size issue and Ohio State graphic team wasting no time

Someday I’ll tell my kids when the players signed their letter of intent on national signing day.

Word of the day: haptic.

CROWD TOUGH. Here’s a puzzle – last week Ohio State beat Penn State and knocked out Michigan State to extend their streak of six wins in seven games, earning Buckeye a seventh place finish in the AP survey.

… and their national title chances are gone one way or another down.

Yes, last week bookmaker BetOnline.ag gave Ohio State a 33/1 odds to win the 2021 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. As of yesterday, that number is 40/1.

Now, to be fair, the odds for almost everyone have plummeted as well. Only the top four teams and Alabama (who lost their last game by five?) Saw their odds increase. So basically, bettors are more and more convinced that one of these teams will win the natty.

It is very good. Continue to doubt Zed Key and the Buckeyes. Before you know it, they’ll cut the fillets.

GOTTA DO SOMETHING. You could quite easily make a solid list of the 10 craziest and most completely unprecedented things happening in college football in 2020.

But my favorite is when the NCAA gave every player an extra season of eligibility without even seeming to remotely consider the long-term roster, recruiting, and financial ramifications.

But now, almost six months later, they realize that there will be problems in the years to come.

The transfer surge is expected to continue well into next year’s cycle, not only because of the one-time transfer exception, but because of a COVID-19-inspired rule granting each athlete an extra year of eligibility. While seniors returning for next season do not count towards a team’s 85 purse limit, players from all future classes do.

For example, players who were juniors in the fall of 2020 and who would normally have graduated by the 2022 season will now have the option to return as fifth or even sixth year seniors. They will count against the 85. Meanwhile, some freshman classes in 2021 will be giant: 25 incoming freshmen will be paired with around 25 freshmen in “COVID shirts” (real sophomores who were first year in 2020) for a recruit class of 50 people. This leaves 35 places for three classes.

While teams may have 85 stock players each year, they can only recruit 25 new players per year. The 100 signatories over four years leave room for maneuver at 15 players for natural attrition. New transfer legislation and the looming COVID-shirter wave are causing unnatural attrition.

In the 2022 and 2023 recruiting cycles, coaches have one of two choices: keep their fellows and add fewer signatories, or kick out fellows and sign a regular class.

“The biggest challenge is these juniors who will become seniors [in 2022]»Says Jamey Chadwell, coach of Coastal Carolina. “These will be difficult discussions.”

The whole piece does a great job of pointing out that there isn’t enough places available already for kids who think they are going to be transferring, and that’s before you give each player for at least four classes an additional season of eligibility and allow one free transfer for all players.

Unless the NCAA does something about the 85 scholarship limit, it will be a complete disaster in a few years and will almost certainly cost kids college degrees that they would have otherwise received.

I totally agree to give players some extra eligibility – that’s good. But doing it without adjusting the list size limits will leave countless kids to dry off.

OBEY YOUR SENIORS. Aaron Craft hasn’t donned Buckeye’s uniform for almost seven years and hasn’t even played under Chris Holtmann, but you’d be wrong if you thought he didn’t have an influence in that dressing room yet.

Aaron Craft is to return to the program as a team leader. I’m sure medical school and being a dad is tough and everything, but priorities are priorities.

IT WAS QUICK. Yesterday, EA Sports announced that it will be making a college football video game again. And the Ohio State graphics team wasted absolutely no time turning that into a recruiting opportunity.
