Skull Session: Urban Meyer secures another win over Jim Harbaugh, Meyer could draft Justin Fields, and Ohio State loss story continues

One of my favorite things about 2021 so far is that Jae’Sean Tate is actually good.

Hand raised, I forbade him to have a chance in the league unless he develops an outside shot or grows about four inches. He did neither and seems to be doing well!

Word of the day: Mellifluous.

ANOTHER VICTORY OVER HARBAUGH. Urban Meyer retired from kicking Jim Harbaugh’s ass two years ago, but he did it again unintentionally.

You see, Harbaugh – widely known for his NFL background – has some of the worst job security on the planet and just spent the last month shopping with an NFL team that will listen and not. won’t find anyone who hasn’t even seriously considered it.

Meanwhile, Meyer, who was doing extremely well in his cushy television job and his position on the Ohio State staff, did not appear to have been begged by the Jacksonville Jaguars to come out of retirement and train. their football team without any NFL experience.

It’s a hilarious story of two careers.

Score another big win for Urban Meyer over Jim Harbaugh.

While Harbaugh hasn’t found any NFL takers after all, but posting his resume on Monster.com, his bitter old rival is poised to fill the NFL’s most coveted job.

Meyer was announced Thursday night as the next Jacksonville Jaguars coach, where he’ll laugh all the way down to The Bank (TIAA Bank Field) to take over a franchise that has dibs on the best quarterback since Andrew Luck (Trevor Lawrence), three more top-50 draft picks and over $ 80 million in cap space.

Not long ago, Harbaugh was one of the biggest stars in the NFL, where he led San Francisco to three NFC title games – and one Super Bowl – during his four seasons there. Then, it became its most inaccessible award, its early years in Michigan accompanied by an annual wave of pious speculation.

If you had thought it was possible that Meyer – an all-time college coach but no professional experience – was the most desired NFL candidate, I would have had a beachfront property in Bowling Green to sell you.

And yet, here we are.

Personally, I think it would have been hilarious if Harbaugh got a gig in the NFL and somehow ended up in the same division – because you know full well how it would have gone each year. .

But it is also very good.

FIELDS FOR THE FIRST? Trevor Lawrence has been named the first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft since winning the national title as a true rookie. But with Urban Meyer taking the reins in Jacksonville, is there any chance he’s going with Justin Fields instead?

There he sat, one of less than 4,000 people allowed to enter the building, gazing down from the top of the New Orleans Superdome with his future career change considerations unfolding before his eyes.

Urban Meyer had been on Fox Sports pre- and post-game shows for the PSC Clemson-Ohio State New Year’s Day semifinal game, and at that time reports from his interest in the job of head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars hit a Boil.

On one touch was Trevor Lawrence of Clemson, the overwhelming favorite to be the No.1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. On the other: Justin Fields of Ohio State, coached by Meyer’s protege Ryan Day, during a program that Meyer reshaped into one of the sport’s undisputed titans.

Oh, slit Meyer’s head that night as he sat down and watched Fields outsmart Lawrence.

There have also been reports that Meyer has been in love with Lawrence for a long time, which shouldn’t be so shocking given … he ranked Lawrence ahead of Fields at the start of the season on Fox.

Could his opinion have changed drastically over the past five months? Did Fields’ monster game that night in New Orleans change anything? Could Confidence Day sway the mind of his former boss on Fields? And would that even matter?

Meyer hasn’t recruited or coached Fields, but he certainly knows him. He sat next to him at a basketball game during Fields’ early days on campus, was an assistant athletic director while Fields was at Ohio State, and mentored Fields in his leadership lessons while Fields was a captain.

Having said that, I think the whole “Ohio State Connection” issue is a bit of an exaggeration. If Meyer takes Fields, it won’t be because he knows him in leadership classes, it will be because Fields is his wet dream of a quarterback with his passing and running ability.

Now, the NFL game is different from the professional game and Meyer may not be looking for an elite passer built like Herschel Walker. Plus, Meyer was also notoriously high on Trevor Lawrence, so there’s a good chance that’s where the Jags are going anyway.

But personally, I think the Fields vs. Lawrence debate will be a lot stronger than people think – in this year’s draft and in the years to come.

O IT HURTS. As for the losses in the domestic title match, I think this year’s loss to Bama is as trivial as it gets. I don’t really see much long term damage to the program and as a fan I’m less bitter about this loss than I’m about a typical regular season mistake.

But there was a huge missed opportunity that will haunt me for a while.

Now imagine what this Tweet would say if the Buckeyes beat Bama.

For years, the narrative around college football has been that Alabama and Clemson are in a league of their own, and everyone is at least a third behind. Ohio State had a chance to kill that narrative this year and tie Bama and Clemson with the most titles in the playoff era. Instead, the loss helps perpetuate it.

But it is okay. Let’s just fire three times in a row and claim the top spot on our own, cool?

TATE STAY A CANE? With the way things have gone for our good friend Tate Martell in Miami, I would have set the odds for him to transfer this offseason at around -800.

But it looks like he’s planning to stay, after all.

Quarterback Tate Martell was one of four hurricanes who opted out of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Martell intends to return to Miami when the spring semester begins Jan. 25, according to a source.

The staff will certainly need to welcome Martell again and discussions will need to take place with him to join the team activities as he has not been on the team for months after serving a suspension to start the 2020 season and to be absent. the team sometimes in 2019 for personal reasons.

To be fair, this does not exclude a transfer. I mean, that’s not how it would be the first time Martell had intended to return to a school before leaving a few days later.

And honestly, he should probably transfer. As tough as his journey has been, he’s clearly talented and college football would be a lot more fun if he started for a Sun Belt side.

I have no hatred for Tate. I want to see him do his thing somewhere where he actually has a chance to play, and it’s becoming clear that isn’t going to happen in Miami.

A BIT MORE TIME. You can rightly expect this to be a busy week for player announcements, as all subclasses have until Monday to decide whether they will make the NFL Draft.

But we may not hear from Everybody that’s on the fence, because the NFL gives seniors extra time.

Marcus Williamson has already told us he’s coming back, but other than that there hasn’t been any official announcement.

For what it’s worth, the majority of Ohio State’s fourth-year players have participated in the Senior Day festivities, likely signaling that they’re about to leave. But there were a few notable resistance fighters on that front, including Haskell Garrett and Shaun Wade.

I find it hard to believe we’ll have to wait until March for these decisions, but if the world’s best third-team All-Big Ten defensive tackle and best security on the roster wants to tease me for a month and a half, it is their right and I respect that.
