Sledgehammer Games Maybe Teased COD 2021 on Twitter

Is Sledgehammer Games making the next Call of Duty? A new tease on Twitter is making fans curious about the developer’s next project.

Black Ops Cold War was a complicated project to develop. Those who follow Call of Duty widely may know that originally the COD title of 2020 was to be developed by Sledgehammer Games.

But following internal conflicts within the organization, Activision made the decision to hand the responsibility over to Treyarch. This left Sledgehammer Games as one of the secondary developers of Call of Duty, alongside Raven Software.

Now, fans believe Sledgehammer Games could take the wheel and develop COD 2021 or 2022 already.

Is Sledgehammer Games developing Call of Duty 2021?

While many thought Sledgehammer Games was ditching the Call of Duty cycle, that may not be entirely true. After all, in 2020 COO Andy Wilson says Sledgehammer Games has actually hired over 150 new employees.

Plus, a recent tease may have just fallen this New Year. Celebrating the end of 2020, the official Sledgehammer Games Twitter posted the following message:

“Turn off. Turn on. Let’s try again. Happy New Year!”

Many fans were quick to jump on the hype bandwagon, seeing this post as confirmation that Sledgehammer will continue to develop COD as usual.

Some fans are even clamoring for sequels to past titles from Sledgehammer Games. It remains to be seen whether the developer is working on Advanced Warfare 2, another World War II title, or a new series.

In addition, it is always possible that Sledgehammer games was simply referring to how best to mend broken games, rather than announcing his return to the ring. But we suspect this big hiring wave means the company is back in business.

Is the next Call of Duty going to be Modern Warfare 2?

Recently we have seen some strong rumors that the next Call of Duty is Modern Warfare 2. This includes the Warzone final cutscene that directly teases Modern Warfare 2.

New leaks also suggest Modern Warfare 2 is expected to be the 2021 release, with a 2-year development time since Infinity Ward. If that turns out to be the case, Sledgehammer Games is probably working on the 2022 launch.

Modern Warfare 2 leaks for 2021

We hope this turns out to be the case, as Call of Duty definitely takes over a year to develop. Even combining existing resources and launching it with less content, Black Ops Cold War was barely ready for release.

It’s only now, with the Season 1 midseason update, that we’re starting to get the kind of content players should expect from a new Call of Duty. And despite all of that, a new Zombies map won’t be released until Cold War Season 2.

Speaking of Sledgehammer Games, players can now get a true Sledgehammer in Black Ops Cold War and Warzone. We imagine that despite remarkable timing, this isn’t a tease for Sledgehammer Games doing COD 2021, however.
