For many, Android 12 is Material You first and foremost, along with all the other features and enhancements that play a secondary role in the new (and quite sleek) dynamic theme and design language. Google is already updating some of its apps to take advantage of the new changes, but an enterprising developer has taken on the partially undocumented and not final APIs. Sleep as Android will be releasing a beta version of the Material You app from Android 12 soon, and you can download it a few days earlier here.
Urbandroid, the developer behind Sleep as Android, is generally at the forefront of Android software changes. The app is frequently updated to take advantage of new features as they land, and Google has even been known to make changes with the entry of Urbandroid. So it’s no surprise to see the developer getting ahead of the launch of Material You support almost simultaneously with Google’s wider rollout of the feature in Android 12 Beta 3 yesterday. However, the developer tells us that the new APIs are only partially documented and not yet final, which concretely means that the current Material You implementation of the app could crash or change before Android 12 is no longer stable. late this year.
But, in the meantime, Sleep as Android’s new dynamic theme support is pretty hot and a decent model for other developers to look at when implementing their own support.
In the words of the developer, the new beta of the app is about 99% Material You style, taking advantage of multiple brightnesses and saturations of the accent color selected by the system depending on your background – although it doesn’t seem to support the several distinct accent colors that some bits of the Material You system use. (This could be a limitation of the current unfinished APIs, as far as I know)
The stylish new dynamic theme extends from charts and graphs in the different sections that use them, to watch faces that show your sleep score and associated metrics, in light and dark themes. Readability and usability are both maintained, and most importantly it’s also easy to analyze the data at a glance, although some clear theme color combinations can make it a little easier. little difficult to read text. But this is still a beta and even the screenshots above show a few elements of the app that didn’t fully support the new color scheme. Expect this to change at least a bit over time.
The features of this latest version haven’t changed, as far as we can tell, but appearances have clearly changed. This makes Sleep as Android one of the first third-party apps to support Google’s new Material You dynamic theme, beating both the final version of the associated API and the stable rollout of Android 12.
Urbandroid developer Petr Nalevka told me that Google has also made it possible to push apps targeting Android 12 to the Play Store, so a beta with these changes will be rolling out in the next few days.
