Japanese Meteorological Institute said the accumulated rainfall after three hours of lejak in an area of Kōči Prefecture reached 26.3 centimeters, the highest value recorded since the observation of these data in 1976.
Determine the exact number of casualties is difficult due to the size of the affected area, floods and landslides. The Japanese government has set up an emergency center in the prime minister's office. Approximately 54,000 soldiers, cops and firefighters participated in rescue operations.
