ROME. The famous Italian director and screenwriter Bernardo Bertolucci died at the age of 77 in Rome from the aftermath of a long illness.

The AFP AFP news agency reported on Monday to RAI News 24.

The director The Last Tango in Paris, Conformist, Last Emperor, Aquatic Beauty, Twentieth Century, Little Buddha or Dreamwriters has won several awards, including the Oscar and the Golden Lion of Venice for his work of an entire life.

His "great oriental films" – the saga of the last Chinese emperor of 1987, awarded by the nine Oscars, or an epic of the streets of two different worlds – Tibetan Buddhism and the modern American culture of the Little Buddha of 1993.

Bertolucci also caused one of the biggest scandals in the history of cinema, in 1972 with his erotic film The Last Tango in Paris.
