PSA to produce batteries for electric and hybrid cars in Slovakia

The Trnava plant of the PSA automotive group will become the first in which the French company will produce batteries for electric cars and plug-in hybrids.

Reuters announces that PSA will launch batteries in Slovakia that can be delivered to Peugeot, Citroën, Opel and DS. And this should only be a beginning. In this way, the Slovak government is starting to partly realize its plans for the production of this extremely important element of electrified cars.

The industrial director of Peugeot, Yann Vincent, said that he was likely to do it in other factories, at least in Spain, in connection with the production of PSA batteries. Indeed, they expect a growing demand for electric and hybrid vehicles.

PSA currently purchases batteries from LG Chem in South Korea and CATL in China. It should be added, however, that the group will use battery cells supplied by suppliers to manufacture batteries. It will therefore continue to depend on third party production capabilities in this area.

In any case, this step should lead to a reduction in the cost of electric cars and plug-in hybrid vehicles. We hope this will also be reflected in the final prices of electrified vehicles over time.

Slovakia wants to produce battery cells

Battery production in Trnava is undoubtedly good news for Slovakia, as it will probably create new jobs in a long-term perspective. It could also produce additional electrified models to complete the Peugeot e-208.

However, the Slovakian government also wants to attract battery cell manufacturers in the Slovak Republic, which are the basic elements of batteries, as well as launching their own cell production.

To support these ambitions, the Slovak Battery Alliance was created to participate in the European Battery Alliance. Last month, the "Working Group on the Development of Industrial Battery Production in Slovakia" was created. And this is part of the "Measures to remove barriers to the sustainable development of the automotive industry in Slovakia".

This working group includes representatives from the public administration, the automotive sector, entrepreneurs, the European Investment Bank and SARIO.
