Alcohol consumption in Slovakia has reached a minimum since last year, according to information published by the Slovak Statistical Office. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), alcohol consumption in Slovakia was comparable to that of other countries in the region
Last year, 8.2 liters of pure alcohol consumed per capita in Slovakia. Even in the early 1990s, consumption exceeded the limit of ten liters.
Per capita, the consumption of spirits and wine last year declined in the country under the Tatra, while beer consumption increased. On average, each Slovak drank 72 liters of soft drink, an increase of 5% over the previous year, when beer consumption reached its minimum in the modern history of the country.
Slovakia has restricted television advertising to spirits and has also banned the sale of alcohol to persons under 18 years of age. Nevertheless, the proportion of children who admitted to drinking alcohol has increased.
While alcohol consumption declined, per capita non-alcoholic beverage consumption increased by three percent last year to about 218 liters.
