BEHRUT, July 4 (WebNoviny.sk) – Requests for total withdrawal of Iran from Syria are unrealistic. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday after meeting with his Jordanian counterpart. As he said, Iran is one of the major powers in the region, and so it is "absolutely unrealistic" to expect to give up its interests. According to Lavrov, the regional powers should negotiate on their mutual disputes and hear about a compromise.
Russia and Iran bring key military support to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces. Israel has long argued that it would not tolerate Iran's military presence in Syria and sent its fighters against Iranian targets in recent months
Lavrov also said that Russian President Vladimir Putin and the US President Donald Trump would discuss the situation in Syria. Government forces conduct an offensive at their joint summit in Finland on 16 July.
