The first heart transplant in Czechoslovakia was performed 50 years ago

Bratislava, July 9 (TASR) – The first heart transplant in the former Czechoslovakia, but also in central and eastern Europe, was conducted by a medical team led by Prof. Dr. MD. Karola Šišek, DrSc. and doc. MD. Ladislav Kužel, DrSc. Fifty years ago, on July 9, 1968, the II. from the Surgical Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine of the Comenius University (LF UK) to Partizánska Street in Bratislava. She is considered the first patient after the operation, died from other diseases. It was the 24th heart transplant in the world.

Transplantation with noncirculating blood was preceded by an experimental and clinical preparation. In 1966-1968, MUDr. Congratulations on a study stay at the Pacific Medical Center in the United States, where he earned a Master's degree in Clinical Science after defending his thesis. After returning to Slovakia, he was the initiator of this transplant. The heart was a 46-year-old man who had suffered a fatal brain injury when he had fallen off the balcony and was the recipient of a 54-year-old woman. The operation lasted more than five hours. On July 9, 1968, however, a sad message came in the evening – the transplanted heart failed.

Christiaan Neethling Barnard Christiean Neethling Barnard was the first historic human heart transplant on December 3, 1967 in Cape Town, South Africa (JAR). The reactions were different – from enthusiasm to skepticism. However, this very first heart transplant was a very powerful stimulus for dozens and hundreds of cardiac surgeons who decided to follow Barnard.

The first successful heart transplant in the former Czechoslovakia was carried out by Pavel Firt on January 31, 1984 at the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM) in Prague. The recipient lived with a second heart for 13 years and died of renal failure due to the long-term pharmacological burden of the organism

A systematic program of heart transplantation in Slovakia was founded by Prof. MD. Juraj Fabián, DrSc., FESC. Since the beginning of the transplant program in Slovakia, teams capable of transplanting the heart in about five hours are constantly being prepared. Patients can then lead a life of their own.
