Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday signed a law to create a new Muslim autonomous unit named Bangsamoro on the island of Mindanao and adjacent territories in the south of the country.
Duterte announced the signing of a law passed by the Philippine Parliament in recent months during his appearance in the city of Zamboanga located in another part of troubled Mindanao Island. (19659003) The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region Law is the completion of the 2014 peace agreement concluded by the Philippine Government and the Morov Islamic Liberation Front (MILF)).
MILF President Murad Ebrahim said members of this organization and other interested groups will hold consultations before the referendum. The leadership of the MILF, however, believes that the new autonomy, if supported by its citizens, will force the political settlement of the conflict and cleavage groups.
The current Muslim Autonomous Region of Mindanau and its adjacent islands comprises five provinces. However, it relies heavily on the central government of the Philippines because it has no autonomy in the financial sphere
The conflict in Mindanau has claimed more than 120,000 lives in nearly half a century and has hunted about two million people.
