Vietnamese assassins want to be released: court asked expert opinion

In April 1994, Hauser and Matta killed a five-member Vietnamese family in Bratislava, including a small child, serving time in Leopoldov. The Penal Code, after 25 years in prison and subject to the conditions set out, provides for the possibility of life imprisonment. Courts, in the case of applications for parole, assess compliance with formal and material conditions. In its judgment, the court should convince the convicted that, in the execution of his sentence, he has shown progress and that he should be able to lead a suitable life in the future. In this case, the Trnava District Court also requested expert opinion. In April 1994, Hauser and Matta murdered a five-member Vietnamese family in Stara Vajnorska, Bratislava, including a pregnant woman and a two-year-old child. The adult victims were shot with a machine gun, strangled with a pillow and took over one million crowns in the family business.

Hauser and Matt had originally asked to be released for five years of imprisonment and the court dismissed them for non-compliance. Hauser then asserted that he was entitled to seek his dismissal because he had been tried under a law that originally authorized his release after twenty years. In the Matt case, the court found that it was not possible to establish, from the circumstances in which the convict was convicted, a positive prognosis on his possible behavior in release case. In Slovakia, more than 50 convicts are currently serving a life sentence.
