SMU has dramatically toppled Louisiana Tech.
Louisiana Tech extended a 34-33 lead to a 37-33 lead with just 36 seconds left in regulation. SMU would need a miracle to leave Ruston with a win.
This miracle happened.
The Mustangs took over at their own 27s and completed three quick passes to advance to Louisiana Tech’s 33-yard line with six seconds left.
Late by four, Tanner Mordecai built up some space, allowed his receivers to advance onto the pitch and tossed a Hail Mary into the end zone. The pass was pinned down by defenders at Louisiana Tech and in the waiting arms of Reggie Roberson.
Unbelievable.
In a Hail Mary game, defensive players learn to hit the ball on the grass. This piece is a prime example of why.
A group of Louisiana Tech defensemen were encamped under the ball, but none chased him like EMS wide receiver Rashee Rice, who actually sped up through the mass of defenders and pushed him in Roberson’s direction.
Which game.
To say that the advertisers on SMU Radio were excited would be an understatement.
The winning score was the fifth touchdown pass of the day for Mordecai, who also finished with 395 passing yards. SMU led 23-14 early in the third quarter and held a 33-28 lead early in the fourth.
Louisiana Tech however came back strong and took a 34-33 lead on an Austin Kendall touchdown pass with 5:07 to go. The Bulldogs then used up some time and added a field goal to bring the score to 37-33 with 36 seconds left.
But that would not be enough.
With the win, SMU improved to 3-0 over the year. Louisiana Tech fell to 1-2.
Saturday’s result marks the Bulldogs’ second brutal loss. In Week 1, Louisiana Tech led Mississippi State 34-14 in the fourth quarter just to allow three touchdowns in the final 12 minutes and lose 35-34.
