ATHENS – Kirby Smart said during the week that JT Daniels will only play South Carolina if he is 100 percent.
Safe to say, the Georgia junior quarterback was, as he started and threw a pass for the first time in a red Georgia jersey.
Daniels added another long touchdown pass to Adonai Mitchell, answering any questions about his arm strength after Clemson’s game. He finished the game by completing 23 of 31 passes for 303 yards and 3 touchdowns.
The Georgian quarterback also excelled in situational football. In the middle of an 11-play, 90-yard run, Daniels shot twice at Mitchell and Kearis Jackson who had early tries on third and long-lasting situations.
Then, just 19 seconds from the end of the first half, Daniels tallied for 39 yards on 3 throws to put Georgia within shooting range and give the Bulldogs a 26-6 halftime lead.
Daniels’ status had been closely followed in the two weeks following Clemson’s game. After his performance against South Carolina, it’s safe to say that there isn’t much to fear regarding the talented Georgia quarterback.
Curious quarterback call
Of course, Kirby Smart couldn’t help but make a curious quarterback call. After Daniels led Georgia in touchdowns on the first two discs, Stetson Bennett entered the game as a quarterback.
Bennett was the hero a week ago, throwing 5 touchdowns in a win for the Bulldogs. He didn’t have the same success this time around, since he was intercepted on his first attempt.
The turnover led to a placement in South Carolina, and the decision to insert Bennett could be seen as a replica of last week’s 2-1-2-1 plan, where Bennett played two series and then Carson Beck entered the game.
But Bennett didn’t play another streak in the first half, as Daniels regained full control of the Georgian offense. Georgia put Bennett back in the game as the Bulldogs led 40-13 in the fourth quarter. Beck didn’t play a snap for Georgia.
Maybe Smart was trying to reward Bennett for his game last week. Or manage Daniels’ health. Either way, the move didn’t work.
Georgia’s defense leaks, but still dominant
Georgia’s defense was not perfect on Saturday. Wide receiver Josh Vann created problems for just about every defensive back, finishing with 3 receptions for 128 yards and South Carolina’s lone touchdown.
