in the last installment of PolygonWith the ongoing in-depth series on creating classic fighting games, veteran developer Toyohisa Tanabe has revealed that his team at SNK is experimenting with crossovers as early as King of Fighters 98.

“The team ended up doing a construction of King of Fighters 98 with Ryu and Ken [from Street Fighter] in it, ”Tanabe said. “It’s not something that a lot of people know. [B]yeah, just for fun, before Capcom vs. SNK was one thing, I was playing with Ryu and Ken in King of Fighters 98.

“We did it on development hardware, so of course it was never on a physical cartridge. Plus, I just remember that now, but it wasn’t just Ryu and Ken that we ended up playing with. We put Dragon ball characters, like Son Goku, too. “

Fighting game crossovers might be a bit old hat now, but in previous years Capcom vs. SNK brought together its two huge studios, this kind of match was a matter of the imagination. I do hope that as Samurai Shodown V Perfect, an internal construction of King of Fighters 98 along with Ryu, Ken and Goku can still be found picking up dust somewhere in the storage unit of some SNK developers.
