NEW YORK (AP) – "Saturday Night Live" canceled its invitation to a cast member who posted a video last year in which he used a racial insult for the Chinese people and ridiculed the Asians who tried to Learn English.

A representative of the show said Monday that the language used by Shane Gillis was "offensive, offensive and unacceptable", and the show was not aware of comments from the past that had been criticized.

"Saturday Night Live" is excused by saying that its validation process "did not live up to our standard".

In a tweet, Gillis said that he respected the decision of the series and was "sincerely grateful for the opportunity." with a slight knock on the show, mentioning that he was still a guy from "Mad TV" anyway.

In the video clip apparently posted in 2018, Gillis calls Chinatown an unidentified city of "peanut" and uses a derogatory word for the Chinese. He also complained of having "heard an Asian trying to learn English".

The representative of "Saturday Night Live" said that the show had hired Gillis "on the strength of his acting talent and his impressive audition for SNL."

The Gillis clip reappeared last week, just hours after NBC announced that he and two other people, including the only American actor, had joined the cast as stars.

"Saturday Night Live" has been warm over the years for its general lack of ethnic diversity, with reduced Asian representation among its members or hosts.

Former players Fred Armisen and Rob Schneider are both from an Asian quarter, but none have been widely recognized for their Asian ancestry. Among the hosts, the long history of "SNL" includes a short list of Asian or Asian Americans, including Awkwafina, Aziz Ansari and Jackie Chan.
