“Saturday Night Live” kicked off the second episode of Season 47 with a cold opening that touched on Facebook whistleblower’s testimony to Congress, though much of the joke was about the US Senators asking the questions.
Heidi Gardner, a cast member of “SNL,” played Frances Haugen, a former product manager at Facebook who released internal documents and damaging revelations on the social media company. But the cold-open sketch was less focused on Haugen blowing the lid off Facebook’s damaging business practices and more on poking fun at US Senators not quite understanding Facebook – or the internet in general.
“My question is, I have 2,000 friends on Facebook. Is it good? “Cecily Strong asked as Senator Dianne Feinstein. Kyle Mooney Senator John Kennedy then asked where the algorithm is and how big is it.
Aidy Bryant’s Ted Cruz landed the biggest jokes, asking “How do you turn off this feature on Facebook where everyone comments on all your posts and says, ‘You are bad’ and they hate you?” Cruz went on to note that he had seen groups with “hateful names” like “Ted Cruz Sucks” and “Ted Cruz Is the Zodiac Killer”.
The skit also revealed that Senators shared various memes and asked Haugen what they wanted to say, while James Austin Johnson – a new member of the “SNL” cast this season who debuted last week as President Joe Biden – made his debut as Senator Lindsey Graham.
The skit ended by sending out a “special message” from Alex Moffat as the creepy Mark Zuckerberg, before instead casting a video of Pete Davidson as OG’s social media founder: Tom from MySpace. Davidson got the last cold line open, as he launched into the credits with a “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!”
Kim Kardashian West has taken on the animation of the second episode of this season with musical guest Halsey, following the season premiere hosted by Owen Wilson.
