Snoop Dogg on Monday urged the NBA and NFL to stop punishing players for using marijuana, saying they lag behind the other two major North American professional sports leagues when it comes to adopting policy more progressive drug testing.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! Guest host Stephen A. Smith, who has made a habit of imploring athletes to “stay away from the grass,” first asked the rapper if he was okay with it.
“I agree with your position regarding athletes who have commissaries, rules, regulations and tests… things that might prevent them from getting their money. But when I talk to artists and people like me, we don’t have a commissioner, we don’t have any of that stuff, so we’re not drug tested, ”said Snoop Dogg, who launched in 2015 his own brand of cannabis products.
Athletes, he continued, “Can hang out with rappers, but [they] can’t do what rappers do.
Smith went on to ask if it made sense for professional sports leagues to run drug tests and punish athletes with fines and suspensions if they test positive.
Not at all, said Snoop Dogg.
“What happens is you have these players taking these pills, and they get addicted to these pills, and it still doesn’t give them the relief they need when it comes to pain or whatever. ‘they are crossing,’ he said. .
Marijuana in any form would do the trick without the side effects of pain relievers, he explained.
“I push for it in sports because baseball doesn’t test for marijuana [and] hockey doesn’t test for marijuana, so it should be the same with basketball and football.
A high-profile case of an athlete failing a drug test occurred last month when American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson was effectively banned from competing in the Olympics because she had smoked marijuana after learning that his biological mother had passed away.
The incident was quickly satirized by Onion, who said: “The dream crushed on trivial bullshit represents the nation better than the gold medal ever could.”
