A powerful storm that began its journey Sunday in California will cross the country over the next two or three days, sowing abundant snow, torrential rain and crippling ice for more than 200 million Americans.

That's about 60% of the population, said AccuWeather. "Parts of 39 of the 48 contiguous United States will be affected by the huge storm, including all states east of the Mississippi," said Faith Eherts, Meteorologist at AccuWeather.

On Monday, the storm targeted its rage in the southern Rockies. A foot of snow fell in Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico.

On Tuesday, the storm will generate heavy snow and strong winds in the central United States, the National Weather Service said.

Late Tuesday and late Wednesday, the threat of heavy snow, ice storms and dangerous shifts will spread in the Midwest, the Ohio Valley, the central Atlantic and the Northeast.

"Kansas City, Omaha, Des Moines, Minneapolis and Duluth could all receive several inches of snow," said Tyler Roys, meteorologist at AccuWeather.

Weather Channel warned that the metropolitan areas of Washington DC, Baltimore and Philadelphia would see snow accumulate before turning into a mixture of slush, freezing rain and then rain. This could make Wednesday morning's commute dangerous in these cities.

Freezing rain and ice will be especially dangerous in the mountains of West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina, said weather.com, causing tree damage and scattered power outages. Smaller amounts of ice are forecast for parts of Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

In the south, several heavy rains and even some severe thunderstorms are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Up to half a foot of rain could cover much of northern Mississippi, northern Alabama and Tennessee, where warnings and flood warnings were posted.

The summer will continue to go early in Florida on Tuesday, as temperatures soared in the 1980s. Several Florida cities set records on Monday, including Vero Beach, which tied an all-time record of 89 degrees in February.

Unusual heat is expected to continue in the Sunshine State for most of the week.
