The southwestern United States experienced unusual winter conditions, while Las Vegas was covered with a layer of snow.
Nearly an inch of snow fell at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, causing at least 100 flight cancellations. According to the Associated Press, this is the first major snowfall recorded by the airport in a decade. The roads between Los Angeles and Las Vegas were closed due to poor weather and reduced visibility. The Flagstaff Pulliam Airport, a small airport in Arizona, was also closed by the storm after visibility was zero.
Three inches of snow has been reported in some areas of Las Vegas. Residents, who rarely see the snow, were photographed constructing snowmen and sledding. Many have visited social media, posting photos and videos of the snow with surprise and delight.
The snow dusted the city's famous strip, driving crowds out of the casinos to take pictures, and a snowman was built under the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign. The palms of the band received an unknown snow cover.
The Las Vegas Weather Forecasting Bureau tweeted that it was the coldest February ever recorded since 2004. According to the National Weather Service's archive, the snowiest February was that of February. 1939, when 4.1 inches of snow fell.
In California, snow has settled in the foothills of the southern state. The snow is so scarce in the area that residents have expressed confusion about what was falling from the sky. The National Weather Service of Los Angeles tweeted to dispel the confusion: "Okay, that's snow!"
Malibu, Pasadena, West Hollywood and Calabasas have all seen a powder coating. School districts in the San Bernardino Mountains declared Thursday a rare snow day. Campers from Joshua Tree National Park woke up Thursday to discover that their tents were covered with snow, although the temperature in the park usually reaches a low of about 40 degrees Fahrenheit in February.
The cold and wet weather is a welcome relief for California, which has recently been hit by dangerous periods of drought and forest fires. The US drought monitor reports that this winter's weather has eased drought conditions in most of the state.
The Los Angeles National Weather Service predicts that temperatures in the city are expected to drop between 29 and 32 degrees Friday morning, with areas reaching temperatures as high as 27 degrees.
