Southwestern US hit by winter storm

Southwestern parts, known for their sunny climate, have experienced a winter wonderland this week. Las Vegas was hit by its second snowstorm in a week on Wednesday, and is the largest amount of snow the city has received for more than 10 years.

A winter storm in the southwest of the country hit Las Vegas with a rare half-inch of snow on Wednesday. According to National Meteorological Service, it's a record for that date. The areas around the city have received 1 to 3 inches, delighting tourists and disconcerting residents. the NWS says the snow could continue until Friday, potentially becoming a freezing rain.

In December 2008, 3.6 inches of snow fell on Las Vegas – the last time the city was able to measure the amount. While Wednesday had seen the first measurable amount of snow in Las Vegas since, it was not even the first snowstorm this month. Small amounts of snow fell in the city on February 10, Sunday and Monday. The record snowfall in Las Vegas in one day was 7.4 inches on January 31, 1979.

Las Vegas schools remained open Thursday but classes were canceled for Friday. The storm closed some highways and delayed dozens of flights at McCarran International Airport, which record 0.8 inches. "We do not have snow plows," said AP spokeswoman Christine Crews, spokeswoman for the airport. She added that about 100 flights had been canceled due to snow and ice.

Residents of Las Vegas were shocked by the low amount of snow throughout the week, sharing their startling photos on social media.
