Snowstorm hitting Denver Saturday noon, continuing through Sunday

The Denver area woke up to clouds and drizzle on Saturday, leaving people wondering where the promised snow is.

“I assure you it happens,” National Weather Service meteorologist David Barjenbruch said Saturday morning. “In Denver, we’re still on track for a very big storm.”

It is expected to start just before noon on Saturday, and could even bring “stormy snow”, which Barjenbruch called “pretty cool stuff”.

The national weather service said snow would fall overnight and through Sunday. As of Sunday morning, the metro area will have around 15 inches of snow – with higher amounts in the foothills, especially those to the north.

At the onset of the storm, from late Saturday morning to afternoon, rain can mix with snow, said Barjenbruch. The initial flakes will dissolve, but start to stick to roads and highways in the late afternoon or evening.

The metro and Front Range are under winter storm warning until 6 a.m. Monday. Overnight, Saturday through Sunday, snow will sometimes fall as much as 2 inches per hour. Overall, the storm is expected to drop 1 to 2 feet of snow, with a total of 3 to 4 feet in the foothills, especially Larimer County will be hit hard. While there is still some uncertainty about the upper end snow totals for some areas, the snow is expected to be significant, wet and heavy.

Travel will be “nearly impossible” on Saturday night and most of the day on Sunday, NWS warned, echoing what authorities have been saying for the past few days – stay off the roads and squat at home. Secondary roads, especially in the foothills, will likely be “impassable” on Monday due to the extremely thick snow.
