It might sound like Google+ has been dead for half a decade, but in reality it wasn’t shut down until 2019 in response to several privacy issues and bugs. A class action lawsuit filed by affected users followed shortly after, and last summer we finally started hearing about a settlement. While the previously floating payout number seemed small, the new amount makes the old one look like a jackpot.

Last August, Google+ users were told they could expect an estimated payout of $ 12 – from the $ 7.5 million Google paid – as long as they submit a claim by the deadline of the October 8. It looks like a lot of you wanted to make money because the new settlement amount per claimant is now much lower. After subtracting the legal fees and distributing the remaining money among the 1,720,029 people, each beneficiary will end up $ 2.15 richer than it was this morning (via Ars Technica).

According to the litigation website, payments are transmitted electronically through PayPal or ACH, a process expected to be completed no later than August 14. If you submitted a claim last year, check your bank statement to see if you’ve already received your money.

I don’t know what to suggest you spend your $ 2.15 on. While $ 12 could have covered part of a main course at your favorite local restaurant, $ 2.15 could cover the meter while you eat. Unless you’re buying tacos, in which case: hey, a free taco on Google. You can also convert it to quarters – that’s eight whole gumballs with 15 cents left, and all it cost you was your private data. If you were hoping for more, there is always a small chance of a surprise second payment in a year or two. It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen it happen.

As for Google+, this appears to be its final chapter. Aside from a few surprise hauntings, the small social network that may have long since joined Reader and Inbox in Google’s graveyard.
