So Snoop Dogg just claimed to be a prominent NFT booster

Snoop Dogg, the famous rapper, tweeted on Monday that he’s behind a Twitter account that discusses NFT. Yes, it really is something that has happened. While Snoop Dogg has posted NFTs before, it’s not exactly new to celebrities – running a Twitter account that constantly tweets about crypto, and owning a hundred crypto tokens would be another level, however. Is this revelation real? A joke? It’s not clear, but it’s sure interesting.

@CozomoMedici (apparently named after a prominent Italian Renaissance-era banker) is a Twitter account that has amassed quite a following in the month or two it’s been active and talks about crypto. Part of what made the account splashy was that he apparently spent millions on NFT. The person behind the Medici account talked about disclosing their personal data to at least a few days now, same launch a poll inviting people to guess their true identity. (No, Snoop Dogg was not an option, but AOC and the singer from Muse were). It culminated today when the person behind the account announced that she would be tweeting her identity from her personal account, claiming that she would be discovered because she is considerably famous. Five minutes later, Snoop Dogg tweeted “I’m @CozomoMedici.”

It’s tempting to use Medici’s involvement with Jason Derulo, frontman of “Whatcha Say” and “Wiggle (feat. Snoop Dogg)”, as proof of his importance in space. R&B artist thanked Medici for helping him buy a CryptoPunk earlier this month, but today’s (possible) revelation begs the question: Did Derulo turn to the Medici because they were important in the NFT space, or did he know that it was was actually one of his peers?

Although the Medici account is relatively new, having only been created last month, it still managed to gain some notoriety, having been mentioned in a story by crypto released. The block. The Medici OpenSea account also has around 100 NFTs in its collection (some of which were purchased for millions of dollars from Ethereum).

I know the question you are asking … no, scream … no, freestyle rap on your monitor: Did Cozomo de Medici buy Snoop Dogg themed NFTs? Well, sure, I went snooping around on their OpenSea account, and found some things that would be pretty funny if Medici turned out to be Snoop.

First, minutes after Snoop tweeted his confession, the Medici account purchased two weed-themed NFTs from an artist named NyanDogg. The account has also received a cloud of dull and Snoop-themed NFTs since the reveal.

There is, of course, the possibility that this is a troll on Snoop Dogg’s part, or that Medici and Snoop coordinated this and Medici’s true identity is still unknown. Medici’s Twitter account liked a ton of tweets relating to Snoop Dogg, but to be honest if Snoop was claiming to be me, I’d also love to tweets about this, despite the fact that I’m not actually Snoop Dogg (as far as you know).

It is difficult to say what the fallout from all of this will be. Will Snoop Dogg become a thought leader in the NFT space? Will more celebrities appear to have managed crypto accounts (maybe Snoop’s friend Martha Stewart is Pranksy)? Or will it all turn out to have been an elaborate farce?

At the moment, the answer to all of these questions is unclear, but there is one concrete consequence of Snoop’s tweet: His mentions are now filled with people offering him NFT projects. I never thought I would have that in common with him.

Final note: While, again, I can’t stress enough that there is no hard evidence linking Snoop and the Medici account, there is one more critical clue to point out: Medici often sign tweets with a wine emoji. Do you know who has their own brand of wine? Snoop Dogg. Case closed everyone, we have totally solved it.
