Soapbox: A year later and the overall quality of God of War continues to make waves

Can you believe it's been a year since God of War was launched? Sony just celebrated the anniversary of the game by publishing a series of free avatars and a PlayStation 4 theme, which brought me to reflect on the quality of God of War as a title of 39, adventure and action. I think it's a game of incomparable quality, and here, a year later, I think it deserves to be reiterated.

I have not had the pleasure of rereading God of War – this honor belongs to the unique Sammy Barker. Sammy gave the title 10/10, and once the game ended, a few weeks later, it was a score that I could not discuss. Between its concentration on exploration and its excellent combat system, the basic gameplay is remarkable. It's just the right mix of quieter moments, marked by brutality, and all crowned with a very good story that is superbly interpreted. I think that overall, it's an incredibly hard game to criticize.

But for me, maybe the most impressive part of God of War is his direction. Not only because it manages to put everything in one uninterrupted shot (which still shocks me completely), but also in the way all aspects of the game come together to form this ultra-coherent set. The artistic style, the character design, the layout of the world, the boss fights, the beats of history – everything fits perfectly.

I think God of War is a great example of a game that has a clear and distinct vision. Many titles, especially these days, try to try many different things, which makes the fundamental vision blurry. I think about all that God of War does, that serves its creative purpose, and the result is what many would describe as a masterpiece. For the record, I do not think God of War is a perfect game – I would even say that some aspects, such as lightweight RPG elements, are useless additions – but even from my most critical eye, it's almost impossible to find something that is really worth being chosen.

However, praise should not stop there. It is surprisingly easy to forget that the concept of God of War was once a very different beast. The series has been so successful on PS2 and PS3 thanks to satisfying fights and breathtaking cinematic moments, but for Kratos to be able to make a comeback he will have to reshape his identity – another god of war: Ascension No. was not going to cut it.

The developer Sony Santa Monica has not only restarted God of War as a series, but he also continued the story of Kratos. How many times have we seen not only games, but movies and TV shows getting reset while giving up what was before? God of War on PS4 looks like an entirely new entity, but at the same time, it fully embraces the past of the series. It's crazy to think that the studio was not content to draw it, it broke it out of the park.

A year later, God of War is still one of the absolute best games of the PS4. This is a title that should be put forward whenever someone mentions the quality or benefits of sticking to a clear creative vision. It's also a game for which, after writing this article, I desperately need to start all over again.
