SoCal who confronted black teenager over the phone in NYC in custody

PIRU, California – A California woman seen in video attacking a black teenage girl she falsely accused of stealing her phone from a Manhattan hotel is in custody in the Los Angeles area, officials say law enforcement.

Police said Thursday evening that Miya Ponsetto had been taken into custody by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department. NYPD detectives, who had traveled to California to assist with the search, were also present for the arrest.

Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputies had planned to make a traffic stop on the arrest warrant for her arrest outside New York, but she refused to stop and drove slowly through her neighborhood of Piru, in California, officials said.

When she stopped, she fought and resisted arrest. ABC News reports that she had to be physically restrained and arrested.

Ponsetto is being held without bail and will have an extradition hearing. Once she’s done with New York, she could also face charges in California for resisting arrest and possibly prosecution.

Ponsetto was confirmed as the woman in the Dec. 26 video by her lawyer, Sharen Ghatan.

Ghatan said Ponsetto was “emotionally ill” and remorseful.

The conflict at the Arlo Hotel in lower Manhattan between Ponsetto and Keyon Harrold Jr., 14, was recorded by his father, jazz trumpeter Keyon Harrold, and uploaded.

In her video, an agitated woman is seen asking for her phone to be returned to her as a hotel manager attempts to sort the situation out.

Security video later released by the NYPD shows the woman frantically chasing the teenager as he tries to exit the hotel’s front door. She saw him grab her from behind before the two fell to the ground. Harrold said the phone was returned by an Uber driver soon after.

The altercation drew comparisons with cases like that of Amy Cooper, a white woman who was accused of filing a false report for calling 911 and saying she was threatened by “an African man.” American ”during a dispute in Central Park in New York in May.

Harrold called on the Manhattan district attorney to lay assault and battery charges against Ponsetto.

Ghatan said he spoke to his client, who lives near Los Angeles, on Thursday and that “she seems like a sick person to me.”

She said Ponsetto had “castigated” his concern that his phone was missing and that he was not motivated by race.

“It could have been anyone,” she said.
