Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke to Donny van de Beek about his role in the squad ahead of their midweek victory over Fulham.
The Dutchman’s lack of playing time has been a topic of discussion among fans and the media after signing from Ajax for £ 40million in the summer.
Van de Beek currently finds himself fifth pick at Old Trafford, behind Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay and Fred, who has seen him used as a late substitute on several occasions.
The 23-year-old has only started twice in the Premier League this season but was reinstated in the starting lineup after the discussion to face Liverpool in the FA Cup on Sunday.
Athletic report that Solskjaer spoke to Van de Beek ahead of United’s trip to Fulham on Wednesday night about his lack of minutes.
It is claimed that Solskjaer reassured Van de Beek about his playing time during a brief conversation between the two.
United have no plans to allow the Dutchman to leave on loan or permanently, having signed a contract until 2025 and with the club competing on three fronts, Van de Beek’s playing time is expected to increase.
As part of the negotiations which saw the arrival of Van de Beek from Ajax, he expected to start around half of United’s games, but Pogba’s return to form has affected those plans, although his future is still uncertain at the club.
