Some Target buyers did not have the slightest chance of trying to shop for the retailer's latest designer collaboration on Saturday.

The Vines for Target Summer Inspired Collection went on sale online around 3am EDT on Saturday, with a selection of items sold in minutes.

The collection has also been on sale in stores and many buyers have reported on social media a lack of goods shortly after the opening of stores.

"We fully understand the disappointment, because many items may have sold quickly," Target wrote on Twitter on Saturday, responding to buyers' comments. "We encourage you to periodically check for updates as items can be returned to stores or online."

At 6 pm Saturday, more than 6,000 items had been listed on eBay, many of which had more than doubled the price displayed.

Target has produced similar limited edition collaborations with leading companies and designers including TOMS, Lilly Pulitzer, Hunter, Marimekko and Victoria Beckham.

The Lilly Pulitzer line for Target was marketed in minutes in April 2015 and led to fighting in stores, with many items having landed on eBay.

"Our collaborations tend to be very popular and it looks like some items have been pretty fast. This collection will be available at all Target stores until stocks run out, "said Target. to answer a question on Twitter. "Items returned or canceled or not previously used to fulfill orders may become available again."

Vineyard Vines is best known for its smiling pink whale. It was founded by the Shep and Ian Murray brothers in 1998 and is based on summers at Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. The company has more than 100 independent stores and its merchandise is also sold in more than 600 specialty stores and department stores.
