Some Manhattan Starbucks closed Sunday due to expected protests

MANHATTAN (WABC) – Some Starbucks stores in Manhattan were closed on Sunday due to the expected protests.

A Starbucks official said that out of prudence and with the safety of partners and customers in mind, the decision was made to close the stores.

Eyewitness News stopped at two Starbucks locations and both had signs on their windows saying they were temporarily closed.

Operations are expected to resume Monday.

So far, no major protests or disruptions have been reported in New York.

Meanwhile, some state capitals are closed, fences are being put up and additional police are in place in states across the United States as authorities prepare for potentially violent protests in the coming days.

The heightened security measures were intended to protect government seats from the type of violence that occurred on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, when one of President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the building as Congress certified the vote for electoral college.

The FBI has warned of the potential for armed protests on the nation’s Capitol and the 50 State Capitol buildings starting this weekend.

Some social media posts had targeted protests on Sunday, although it is not known how many people might show up.
