If the season started today, the Brooklyn Nets would have some issues.
Nets general manager Sean Marks told reporters on Tuesday that some of his team’s players could not enter the Barclays Center due to New York City’s recent vaccination mandate.
From ESPN:
“As to whether they could play today, I can’t comment on who might play and so on,” Marks said at the team’s preseason press conference on Tuesday. “There would obviously be a few people missing in this photo.
“I won’t go into who it is, but we’re confident in the next few days before camp everyone will be allowed to participate and so on.”
When asked if he thought the issue would be resolved by the start of the regular season, Marks reportedly said “correct”. It’s unclear whether that means the players in question will be vaccinated or that something will change with the tenure.
Knicks and Warriors also affected by NBA vaccination decision
New York’s vaccination mandate went into effect on September 13, requiring all people over the age of 12 to have proof of vaccination to enter “certain covered premises” in the city, unless they have ‘an approved medical or religious exemption.
The NBA informed teams earlier this month that players would not benefit from an exemption from local vaccination warrants preventing unvaccinated people from entering their home arenas. At the time, that applied to three teams: the Nets, New York Knicks and Golden State Warriors.
For these reasons, Marks said he has had “frank conversations” with hesitant players about the vaccine.

“Obviously I can’t go into details for various reasons, whether it’s HIPAA violations or whoever it is, [but] I think we all understand what’s at stake and we’ve had some very frank conversations, ”Marks said of the vaccine discussions with the Nets players. “These are individual decisions. … It’s obviously out of our control.
“We support vaccination and building a healthy squad. So at this point I think we’re ready to go into the season, we don’t see them – whether it’s a term to city wide or a league term to follow – being kind of a hindrance to put us on a team. “
NBA players are just about the only large group of employees on the field who are not required by the NBA itself to be vaccinated. All NBA coaches, front office and medical staff, security, team communication staff, scorer’s table staff, and officials have been hit with a vaccine warrant, but some players could clearly still face consequences for refusing the vaccine.
