Someone has leaked a full game video of a remastered version of the 2010 Goldeneye 007 game for Xbox Live Arcade. A little history lesson for those not in the know: rare originally developed the first Goldeneye 007 game for the N64, making a multiplayer game with a campaign based on the 1995 James Bond film of the same name. The game was a success, to say the least, and for centuries people have wanted to see the game come to life on a modern console. What they got when Activision kind of got the right to make a reimagined version of the game with Daniel Craig as a link instead of Pierce brosnan, and more content added to the game to make it a bit more competitive and richer for multiplayer. While fun and modern as it was released on the Nintendo Wii, it’s pretty much accepted that the 2010 version doesn’t quite hold up to the original. But that hasn’t stopped Xbox from wanting to do their own remaster for Xbox Live Arcade.
Apparently, the company got through the process of obtaining the source code and made an effort to remaster the remaster for XBLA, but they just never could convince all parties involved to make it work. As Xbox’s Phil Spencer said on Twitter, there were “a lot of different parts to work with, we always gave up.” It makes sense when you think Rare (now owned by Microsoft) had to make a deal with MGM (which owns the Bond franchise), and the game was ultimately released by Nintendo. Add to that the fact that they are working on the Activision 2010 release and this is a recipe for too many cooks who want their fair share of the pie to be worth publishing. But thanks to the person who leaked the images you see below, now we can get a taste of what that might have looked like. This video shows the full Goldeneye 007 experience, with multiplayer and Brosnan returned to the role of Bond.
Oh, what could have been. And who knows, maybe it will spark the interest of all parties again to cooperate and bring the thing out so that everyone can play it.
