Accidentally driving on a live race track should be very difficult to do. In fact, it should be impossible! But for the second time in just over a month, a motorist found himself stranded on the Interlagos circuit in Brazil, although there was no intention to do so as the cars were doing laps.

Twitter user @bmantovani shared a clip from the latest incident, in which a Mercedes-Benz GLA is seen blocking the pit lane exit on what appears to be a track day. The first car to arrive at the scene, from which we have footage on board, slows to a stop as it arrives around the bend and the driver spots the skittish GLA. At this point, the Mercedes is perpendicular to the pit lane; its driver is mired in an unsuccessful attempt to complete a multipoint turn that would send the car against the flow of traffic.

This is when the participant of the second track day arrives, locking the brakes in a much more dramatic stop just before hitting the Mercedes. At this point, the GLA pilot obviously receives the message that may be going in the intended direction is a bad idea. Eventually, the GLA leaves the pit lane and stops in the asphalt strip between the track and the pit lane exit.

No one seems to know how the GLA ended up where it ended up or what caused the comedy of errors that led to it all. Contribution of some Reddit commenters suggests that circuit signage may not be as clear as it could be, especially on days when there is no event in the spotlight and marshals are not keeping dots ‘access.

Then again the last time something like this happened a Mini Cooper accidentally infiltrated a Copa Mercedes race, so it’s hard to say who exactly is the culprit. In this case, the motorist blamed a lack of cones, signs or personnel to prevent access to the circuit –There was nothing that would have indicated the driver was heading for the runway rather than an exit.

We have contacted the circuit for information and will report back if we hear anything. But for those of you who visit the Autódromo José Carlos Pace or even any racing circuit, please don’t go where you are not welcome, lest the world will see you frantically attempting a K-turn in a narrow pit lane – or worse. !
