The 18-year-old son of a retired NYPD assistant inspector has been arrested for allegedly driving his BMW through a group of protesters this week in the West Village, leaving a teenager injured.
Justin Burgos, of Staten Island, was driving in the area around 10:20 p.m. Wednesday when he honked the horn at protesters, who were blocking the corner of Bleecker Street and West 10th Street with bikes as he attempted to overtake them, the police said. police.
As protesters surrounded his Beemer, Burgos sped through the crowd, hitting an 18-year-old, who sustained a right knee injury, cops said. The injured teenager was treated by EMS at the scene.
Several people shot video of the incident, including photographer Leeroy Johnson, who wrote on Twitter that the car almost hit an officer.
User @AshAgony posted a video and wrote: “The protesters ran after the car, then the cops ran after them and the car.”
The driver was stopped nearby on Grove Street and West 6th Street, police said.
Burgos, of Rossville, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury, reckless endangerment, obstruction of government administration and an officer fleeing in a motor vehicle.
He was also slapped with a windshield violation.
