We are rather looking forward to Sound colors: ultimate, an anniversary release of a title that was previously only available on Wii. Just recently, SEGA unveiled a new trailer that showcased a variety of new features in the remaster, with visual improvements and a “rush on rivals” standing out as intriguing additions.
Nintendo has now uploaded its own version of the trailer, although it appears to use the same footage as the cross-platform SEGA download. However, one change caught our attention – the pitch of the early HD visual improvements simply says “redesigned lighting and improved graphics”, deliberately removing a 60fps reference from the original SEGA version (and 4K resolution, but it was a given). You can see them both below, the original and then the Nintendo download.
It certainly seems like a very deliberate change, suggesting it could be a 30fps experience for us on Switch – we’ll keep an eye out for any suggestions to the contrary.
Not necessarily a compromise, although perhaps disappointing for an HD overhaul of a Wii game; after all, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD will provide 60fps. Perhaps the cross-platform development and visual improvements in Sonic Colors: Ultimate made a stable 60fps to ask too much of Nintendo’s hardware.
