Between Samsung at its Unpacked event last week and LG and Huawei at the Mobile World Congress (MWC), the past week and a half was all about 5G (and, to a lesser extent, foldable screen smartphones).
Like OnePlus, Sony has introduced a prototype 5G device to the MWC – even though it could touch visitors. Pocket lint spotted when he visited the exhibition hall.
Like the company's recently announced Xperia 1 phone, the phone's prototype features a large 21: 9 display. The Snapdragon 855 logo was also featured when exhibited at the Qualcomm booth.
According to Adam Marsh, the spokesman for the company Pocket lint spoke of the prototype, internally, Sony calls the device "AG-1".
Marsh was quick to point out that AG-1 was not representative of a commercial device that Sony was considering commercializing. Rather, it is something the company uses to test 5G connectivity with selected telecommunication partners, as well as to experiment with antenna design.
He added that although Sony plans to launch a 5G soon, the company does not think the technology is ready to be used by consumers.
"Right now, from a deployment point of view, 5G is just not there. In 4G, you can always [get] more speed in more places than 5G, for now, "said Marsh.
"We are still very involved in the 5G, we are not launching anything yet. You can see that we have a product in the near future. "
Pocket lint Sony could reveal a mainstream version of the AG-1 at IFA Berlin in September.
