Well, make it official
Insomniac Games could work with Sony a ton, but they are actually independent. Well, they were, until today. During Gamescom, Sony announced that it had actually acquired the studio, having "entered into definitive agreements for the acquisition of Insomniac Games, Inc."
Sony details exactly what happens in the following statement provided to Destructoid (underlining mine): "Once the acquisition is completed, Insomniac Games will join the global development operation of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios (" SIE WWS "). Games is the 14th Studio joined the SIE WWS family, which reinforces SIE's continued commitment to creative excellence and innovation in game development exclusively for PlayStation platforms. Building on a working relationship between Insomniac Games and SIE spanning more than 20 years, this acquisition strengthens the creative strength within the WWS SIE and officially adds a studio to the PlayStation family, which continues to set the bar even higher for story-based games. The daily operations of Insomniac Games after the closing of the acquisition should be managed by the current management team in collaboration with SIE WWS San Mateo Studio. "
Spider Man The PS4 was a cash cow for Sony so it was perfectly logical to want to lock a studio that reached even higher heights than in the past. Given the proximity of Sony Studios with the studio, all future non-PS4 games like the Xbox One-bound Sunset Overdrive (Sony has this IP address now) or multiplatform versions like Song of the depths are now probably pipelines. I also wonder if all their virtual reality games (Edge of Nowhere, The Unspoken, Wild Rites, Stormland) will be going to PSVR at some point!
Also, Spider-Man 2 exclusively on PS4 here we are! This is a huge advantage for Sony and the war of the next generation of consoles is still a little warmer.
